Hi everyone
As even the most absent minded among you will have noticed
by now, the new year has started. In fact, we are done with January and into the first weekend of February. Ofcourse, every serious sports
fan knows what that means: SUPERBOWL WEEKEND!
The Superbowl weekend is BIG in the Woolshed, so we’re looking ahead to
a BIG party tomorrow!
Which reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend
from Holland a couple of weeks ago. While discussing the holidays, she told me
that she always loves the start of the new year as it provides her with some
much needed rest after the holidays because nothing much happens after the
holiday season is over.
This all sounded very alien to me. The start of the year is
one of the busiest periods of the year for me. Ofcourse I know that this all depends
on your fields of interest, but I barely have time to take a day’s rest after new year’s eve before an avalanche of
activity descends. Consider this: in
Scotland, the 2nd of January is a bank holiday as well, which
results in a full SPL round being played.
Then, for the whole of January, the
play offs in the NFL take centre stage, which means a lot of late nights. Just
when the NFL play offs reach their conclusion, Australia Day presents itself
and in the Woolshed, that’s the biggest party of the year, resulting in another
day-long session. This year it was on a Saturday, which added to the
festivities.
Fortunately, the Sunday after that was the Pro Bowl (that is the
All Star game in the NFL) and nobody cares much about that so I could take an
early night. The resting period is short-lived, however, as this weekend will
see the Baltimore Ravens take on the San Francisco 49ers in Superbowl XLVII. I
plan to spend most of Monday in bed.
You think the party is over now? Not even
close, because this weekend, too, both the Gaelic Football League and the Six
Nations rugby tournament get under way.
As residents of the Croke Park area, we
did ofcourse get tickets to the opening match against old rivals Cork, so we’ll
head to the pub for the Wales-Ireland match, walk by the house for a quick
dinner and then it’s off to the GAA matches double header. The Six Nations
tournament rolls right up to St. Patrick’s Day which, ofcourse, is the biggest party in the world, nowhere
more so then in Dublin, the home of St. Patrick’s Day. And then, ofcourse, in
the middle of all this, the knock out stages of the Champions League get
underway.
A quiet start to the year? Not likely. I’m glad we’re going
on a holiday to Lithuania at the end of March.

tomorrow:
